Dunwich is a small town on the western shores of North Stradbroke Island, an Australian landmass off the coast of Queensland. Considered the island’s ferry gateway, the port of Dunwich sees a dozen crossings every day to Cleveland on the Australian mainland, lasting under an hour.
Rich in heritage, the island was originally known as Goompi in the 19th Century until it was renamed by colonisers in 1827, after the village in Suffolk, England. Popular landmarks include the Salt Water Murri Gallery, the iconic cemetery and the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum, offering a range of cultural insights.
Camping and coastal hikes represent more active pursuits, the most well-known being the North Gorge Walk, while you can also fill your days kayaking along the shoreline or visiting one of the numerous nearby lakes.
