Galiano is part of the Southern Gulf Islands in British Columbia, Canada, located just off Vancouver Island’s southeast coast. ‘The gem of the Gulf Islands’ is also the wildest of the archipelago, home to some of the most diverse wildlife in the region. It lies within a busy migratory path for birds, with bald eagles, herons and cormorants commonly seen amongst the hundreds of other species. Keep a keen eye out for black tail deer roaming the ancient forests and pods of orcas carving through the waters, too. Mount Galiano is the island’s highest point, providing incredible hiking trails and breathtaking views, but more relaxing walks can be enjoyed along the shell beach or through the Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park, the most popular in the Gulf Islands. From the mainland, Galiano Island is under and hour away by ferry, with regular sailings available from the Greater Vancouver suburb of Tsawwassen to Sturdies Bay on the island’s southern tip.
Canada, the world’s second largest country by total area, is in North America, with the United States to the south and Greenland to the northeast. Synonymous with the great outdoors, Canada has a huge variety of impressive landscapes ranging from enormous mountains and glittering glaciers to eerie forests and picturesque beaches. Spectacular cityscapes can be found in the capital, Ottawa, the cosmopolitan Toronto and the French-speaking Montreal. Within these cities, you can delve into a vibrant arts scene, enjoy a diverse cuisine or let loose at incredible music events like Jazz parties and classical repertory theatre. If you’re looking to cross the border from the United States, there are regular ferry crossings from Seattle, Washington State to Vancouver Island. Plenty of domestic routes are available along the British Columbian Coast as well, with connections between the popular Victoria and Graham Islands.
