About Matacawalevu Island

Matacawalevu is one of the 6 main islands in the Yasawa archipelago in the Western Division of Fiji.

Characteristic of most islands in the Yasawas, Matacawalevu has a rustically beautiful and hilly landscape, measuring just 4 kilometres long. The beautiful beaches are fringed by colourful coral reefs, too, waiting to be explored by divers and snorkelers alike. It’s also the only island in the archipelago to have beaches facing both north and east.

Matacawalevu is a great spot for backpackers as it boasts vast areas of untouched terrain, budget accommodation and a tiny community of locals spread across a couple of villages.

From Long Beach Resort on the south coast and Bay of Plenty Resort on the east coast, there are daily ferry routes on offer to Denarau on the island of Viti Levu, which is commonly regarded as the Fijian ‘mainland’.
