Mallaig and its port have a long history, with the town’s name originating from the Old Norse meaning for ‘Bay of the Seabirds’. Set in stunning surroundings, the local railway station is the terminus of the West Highland Line which was used in the ‘Harry Potter’ films as the Hogwarts Express railway line. The port of Mallaig is situated at the northern end of the A380, known as ‘the Road to the Isles’, and provides frequent sailings to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. Free car parking is available outside the terminal building and the nearest bus stop is just a five-minute walk away. Inside the building, you’ll find a seated waiting area with toilet facilities.
The small village of Armadale and its port lie towards the southern tip of the Isle of Skye. As the main gateway from Mallaig on the Scottish mainland to the Isle of Skye, the harbour provides frequent crossings between the two ports each week. The ferry terminal has a seated waiting area with a bus shelter situated nearby and can be found at the southern end of the A851, a newly improved road connecting Armadale with the rest of the island. Often regarded as one of Skye’s unfairly overlooked destinations, Armadale offers a great deal to those seeking tranquillity in beautiful surroundings. The bay has an idyllic beach, and the stunning 18th Century ruinous Armadale Castle lies just inland.
