For those wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of a hectic city and escape to a tranquil haven for a few days, La Desirade is the perfect location. With an area of just over 22 square kilometres, the island is one of the smallest and least developed in Guadeloupe: there are no shopping centres or busy town centres, La Desirade mainly consists of long stretches of uninhabited land. Even the most picturesque beaches are largely deserted. Despite the lack of attractions, La Desirade does have something to offer. The lack of population means that there is little crime in the area, so tourists can walk freely among the streets at night. The seafood on offer at many of the restaurants is usually straight from the fishing boats, meaning it is as fresh as anywhere in the world. The delicious food alongside the welcoming atmosphere creates an ambience very popular with tourists. The ferry route out of La Desirade is to Saint Francois in Gaudeloupe, with a daily crossing lasting around 45 minutes. The island is small enough to cover by foot, so it is possible to walk to the port from the town centre; there are also taxis available for those wishing for a quicker journey.
