About Capraia Island

Capraia is the most north-westerly of the seven Tuscan Archipelago islands, formed after a volcanic eruption nearly 10 million years ago. Thanks to its protected national park status, Capraia Island boasts an incredibly rich wildlife and vast areas of unspoiled, hilly terrain. It’s also a popular hiking destination and one of the best routes takes you through the ruined buildings used as a penal colony from the late 1800s until 1986, with some stunning coastal views along the way. The coastline has several idyllic rocky coves with crystalline water, and the main port is set before a ruinous 16th Century castle which was built by the Republic of Genoa, so there’s plenty of fascinating historic sites and picturesque backdrops to be found wherever you go. Capraia Island lies just over 50 kilometres from the Tuscan coast, with frequent crossings provided from the village of Porto to Livorno on the mainland, a city renowned for its excellent seafood and Renaissance forts.
